Penang Island is going to have their own world Music Festival to coincide with Visit Malaysia Year 2007. For three nights, there will be 15 bands – from within Malaysia as well as international bands, performing what has been coined by the recording companies as World Music. They will perform music from cultural roots and showcase strong ethnic edge and identity with traditional instruments being the focal point.

The international bands are from South Africa, Tuva, Russia, Afghanistan, Italy, Singapore, United Kingdom and others. The local bands are from Penang, Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur. Overall, there will be almost 100 musicians participating at this festival. Look out for Dizu Plaatjies’ Ibuyambo (South Africa), Farafina (Burkino Faso), Narasirato Pan Piper(Solomon Islands), Wicked Aura Batucada (Singapore), Huun Huur Tu & Malerija (Tuva/Russia), Tammorra (Italy), Inka Marka (Peru/Chile/Australia), Foghorn Stringband (USA), Ensemble Kaboul (Afghanistan) and more!

Venue for the festival is at the newly launched Quarry Gardens, situated just to the left of the entrance to the famous and older Botanical Gardens. It lies adjacent to the jeep track that goes up to Penang Hill. It is a total festival concept as there will be no chairs set up in rigid formality. The whole area will be like a friendly picnic ground where people can sit or recline on the glass, walk about or join the party crowd on their feet right in front of the stage. This wonderful event with superb performances and unforgetable activities will keep music lovers delighted and is expected to attract about 15,000 music lovers.

The event is jointly organized by the Malaysia Tourism Ministry, Penang Tourism Action Council and the Sarawak Tourism Board.
